In this nation we respect the law

It looks like in this country everyone cares a lot about respecting the law. Two examples.

Most of the times that I cycle in the Hyde Park, I have to do it along lanes where cycling is not allowed (otherwise I need to cycle an extra 10 minutes). So I do it with much care, at a ridiculously slow speed, and even getting off if people are too close. However, I always get complaints (from even 50 metres distance!!) calling me names. So once I stoped, got off, walked towards the shouting old man (with 2 nasty little dogs which DID annoy) to argue calmly that, being 50m away, there was no way of annoying him. I could not stand the talk any longer when he mentioned that 'in this nation we respect the law'. Please note the use of 'nation' instead of 'country'. I think that, had he had more time, he would have liked to use 'our race' instead.

The other case: my brother once told me that the case of David Blunkett illustrated how even the 'minimal' violation of law (the 'poor' guy hadn't even stolen money) led to such a big thing in this country.

So one might be led to conclude that the long democratic tradition of this country has led them to such a law-respectful society.

But then, I wonder if the same criterium is applied to the things that matter. Didn't the UK violate all possible laws invading Iraq? This includes deliberate (and clear lyproven) lying to the UK citizens about the reasons for the invasion. And it looks like Mr. Blair is still there, isn't he? Did any of the major newspapers ever question seriously (this is, in the front page rather than lost somewhere else) that the war was OBVIOUSLY related to the attacks in London?

Anyway, I wish that the people like the old man with 2 nasty dogs, having insulted me, also complained proportionally against those other more serious issues. Or perhaps he thinks that in that other nation they never liked respecting the law...

The war in Iraq was right because something had to be done about Saddam Hussein, who had killed so many people.

So many people spent many years saying things about how awful Saddam Hussein was, but they didn't actualy DO anything about him.

The same thing is happening in Darfur today. People say things every day, but they don't actually do anything.

Anglo-Saxon's believe that you have to take action if you believe in something, not just constantly talking about what should happen, and I think that's a good thing.
